StraightNumbers

Privacy Policy

Version 1.0 · Effective 18 June 2026

StraightNumbers is UK accounting and Making Tax Digital (MTD) software. This policy explains what data the software handles and how. It is written in plain English; it is a summary of our approach, not legal advice.

Your data stays on your computer

StraightNumbers runs locally on your own machine. Your business and client records — invoices, expenses, contacts, bookkeeping and tax figures — are stored only on that machine, in local databases. They are not sent to StraightNumbers, and there is no central server holding your data.

When data leaves your machine

Data is transmitted only when you choose an action that requires it:

You are the data controller

Because your data lives on your own machine, you are the data controller for the records you keep. You are responsible for complying with UK GDPR in respect of any personal data of individuals (for example, your clients or contacts) that you choose to store.

Security

Access to the application is protected by a password, which is stored only as a one-way cryptographic hash — never in plain text. Your business and client data is encrypted at rest, with the access password (or your recovery code) as the key. Credentials used to connect to HMRC are encrypted at rest. For full protection of your data we recommend you enable full-disk encryption (such as BitLocker) and use a password-protected operating-system account.

Reporting a security issue. If you or a third party (for example a security researcher) discover a security vulnerability or a data breach affecting StraightNumbers, please report it to luxianluc@gmail.com with "SECURITY" in the subject line. We aim to acknowledge such reports within 2 working days and ask that the issue is not disclosed publicly until it has been resolved.

Your control over your data

You can export all of your records at any time from within the application (Client Settings → Export) in a machine-readable format. You can delete your data at any time by removing the application's data folder. The software collects no analytics and performs no tracking.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version and its effective date will be published here, and the in-application copy will be updated accordingly.
